November Program Meeting

SPEAKER: Ben Cantu, Lumenwerx
A student of Architecture, Ben has over 30 years of experience in consulting to Architects, Lighting Designers, Engineers, Interior Designers, and Landscape Architects when specifying architectural lighting systems. Ben is currently the NYC/Southeast Sales Manger for Lumenwerx.

DESCRIPTION:
This seminar will give an overview of what PoE means, the current state of the technology, and how it can be deployed in the context of LED lighting. We will explore in detail how PoE nodes can be used to power and control luminaires as well as what some of the tradeoffs are when converting a conventional LED lighting system to a PoE-based approach. We will also analyze the current limitations and benefits of this technology. Finally, some recommendations will be made for the successful deployment of a PoE project in the context of integrating lighting.

Pathogen Reduction for the Modern Age @ Power Design, Inc.

Lunch 11:30 – 12:00

Course: 12:00 – 1:00

Course Description:
This presentation will discuss the use of Germicidal UV (and some non-UV) technologies that may be deployed to reduce pathogens in public spaces. Various technological solutions will be explored – reviewing their history of use, discussing how they work and their effectiveness for typical commercial applications that we see today. Additionally, design considerations and techniques will be discussed in depth for applying UV disinfection technology safely and effectively, incorporating luminaire concepts to supplement the delivery of general ambient illumination. The presentation will also highlight most recent advances in UV disinfection technology that offer more targeted capabilities for today’s specific pathogen reduction needs.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Recognize the ability and effectiveness of ultraviolet (and some near-UV) sources to reduce pathogens on surfaces and in air and water.
  2. Describe how pathogen reduction with a UV or near-UV source is calculated differently than illumination with a visible light source.
  3. Distinguish various ultraviolet and near-ultraviolet wavelengths for use in occupied or unoccupied spaces and discuss how these technologies may be deployed for the least design-disruptive and most cost-effective manner.
  4. Identify the potential impacts of misapplied ultraviolet and near-ultraviolet sources.

Speaker:
Tommy Nichols, LC is the Sales Director for Healthcare Lighting and Luminaire LED, Acuity Brands divisions specializing in vandal resistant, confinement, behavioral health, healthcare, and pathogen reduction solutions. Tommy has grown into his role as Sales Director as a 9 year professional in the lighting industry, with areas of interest in behavioral health lighting, the needs of healthcare specialty spaces, pathogen reduction solutions to make people feel safer in their environment, and a dedication to developing solutions to expedite patient healing.
