CONFERENCE SCOPE
The IES Street & Area Lighting Conference is the only conference of its kind dedicated to improving the outdoor lighting business of electric utilities and energy service companies. We continue to provide an open forum for end -users facing the same questions regarding relevant products for specific application, lighting controls, benchmarks from other users in the lighting community, and milestones reached by municipalities, utilities and DOT’s. We strive to maintain a small community feel, creating a great opportunity to network with industry peers through seminars with speaker Q+A, breakout sessions to discuss issues in-depth, an exhibit hall and many networking events with speakers and peers in a comfortable and open atmosphere.

Power density restrictions frequently competed with and undermined a quality lighting design, with cove and perimeter lighting often falling victim. The increased availability, energy efficiency, and performance of LED luminaires have now prioritized overall lighting design objectives once again. We will review the benefits of illuminating the ceiling and vertical surfaces, further outline the benefits of LED linear technology and provide tips for specifying cove and wall grazing luminaires. Finally, we will review the latest evolution of LED optimized linear cove products.

Presenter Bio: Shawna Spaziani is the Southern Territory Regional Sales Manager for Tempo Lighting, a 34-year-old cove and cinema lighting manufacturer that creates configurable and micro-maintainable indirect lighting solutions for hospitality, retail, and multi-use entertainment venues. Before joining the Tempo Lighting team, Shawna worked with Walt Disney Imagineering and developed her career in the specification lighting industry with Louis Poulsen, Beghelli, and Tivoli. Their lists of clients include Tanger Outlets, Disney, Houston’s, Regal, Coca-Cola, and Hilton brand hotels. Shawna holds a Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering and a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Florida.

Allen M. Weiss is a lighting design professional presently working as a certified continuing education provider for the SESCO lighting Company in Maitland Florida. He is a graduate of Drexel University (1989 alumni award in electrical engineering) with a BS in electrical engineering. Mr. Weiss is a P.E by examination and is presently registered in seven states (Florida, Pennsylvania., Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, North Carolina and Texas retired). Mr. Weiss is a nationally certified LC by examination.
Mr. Weiss has personally designed or supervised the design of over 30 million square ft. of facility lighting designs, many for fortune 100 and fortune 500 clients. Additionally, he has worked on the lighting design of several major roadway, tunnel and bridge projects including Orlando Florida’s East West (408) Expressway and major portions of Charleston West Virginia’s interstate highway system. Several of his lighting designs merited design awards through the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) and the magazine “Architectural Record”. A list of his lighting design projects is available upon request.
Mr. Weiss has taught lighting design as an adjunct professor at Pittsburgh’s La Roche College as well as lectured on lighting design topics at Seminole State College, Brevard Community College, Indian River State College and through his affiliation with the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES). Mr. Weiss served as section chairman of the IES in Philadelphia Pa.

“Light for Life” is a global conversation about the impact of light on the lives of humans, plants, and animals. As hosts of this collaborative webinar series, the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) will facilitate 16 webinars over the course of two days, with 15 partner organizations from around the world. Each organization will curate their own webinar in the series shaping the discussion of “Light for Life” with unique perspectives from all 7 continents.
In practice, the potential of light is something we often view through the lens of our own country’s trends, concerns and accomplishments. By opening this webinar series to global partners, the IES hopes to bring people together to learn from one another about the impact of light on lives all over the world. This series will be free for all.

The Illuminating Engineering Society’s Annual Conference (August 24 – 28, 2020 and August 31 – September 4, 2020) provides a range of educational programming on the art, design, science, and research of lighting relevant to lighting professionals, educators, and related design disciplines. The 2020 Annual Conference has been moved to a virtual setting due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As always, professional education is paramount, with a broad selection of CEU credits available through participation at the conference.
IES’s priority is the health and safety of the lighting community, including our members, staff, supporters, vendors and volunteers. As the COVID-19 pandemic continued to unfold, it became clear that in the face of an unprecedented situation, we needed to make tough choices. While it took longer than expected to reach a resolution, we believe that this was handled with the precision necessary to preserve the well-being of the Society while creating an opportunity for success both in the present and future.
DATES: August 24th – August 28th and August 31st – September 4th
TIMES: Official times to be determined, but there will be two blocks of sessions each day.

The virtual Annual Conference will have sessions that will be held August 24th – August 28th and August 31st – September 4th. By providing a schedule that offers content across these two weeks, registrants will be able to attend all sessions and not have to choose between different tracks.
Despite the disruption we are facing, the IES is excited to bring you the opportunity to participate in the Annual Conference without having to leave your workspace. We will leverage our technology to disseminate valuable, relevant and timely content. There will be no virtual tabletop sessions this year. We will resume tabletops when we return to an in-person annual conference.

Description: This one-hour CEU program discusses how today’s decorative luminaires can – and do – provide functional lighting for commercial applications.
Beginning with discussion of different lighting effects (and how to describe them), we will look at various techniques for applying and integrating decorative luminaires to functional lighting needs.
We will conclude with guidelines to luminaire selection according to light output, direction, and color.

- Explain how you update your sequence of operation to include touchless interfaces, reduce energy costs, aid in building code compliance, occupant comfort.
- Summarize the benefits of daylighting within an office space and how it can promote occupational well-being.

Presenter Background:
John is the Vice President of Total Solution at Acuity Brands Lighting, his team is responsible for promoting lighting control solutions, training, and product selection. He works closely with the other divisions of Acuity to simplify applications and provide insight on customer trends and the effect of code on lighting controls. He has over 28 years of experience in the lighting and controls industry with eight years in electrical design and over 20 years in lighting controls sales and management.

Sea Turtle Conservancy (STC) is the oldest and most accomplished sea turtle organization in the world, founded over 60 years ago with a devotion to sea turtle conservation, education, research, and advocacy. For the past 10 years, STC’s Lighting Team has been working throughout Florida to help beachfront properties retrofit their lights with sea turtle friendly options and to educate coastal officials on the rules of sea turtle friendly lighting. This presentation will address the issues with light on nesting beaches, what laws are in place to protect sea turtles from artificial light, common concerns that customers face regarding sea turtle friendly lighting, and what the best practices are for managing artificial light on our beaches. In addition, we will discuss resources on where to find sea turtle friendly lighting and how you can be a part of the solution.
SPEAKER: Emily Asp, M.S., NAILD LS I
Emily Asp has been a lighting project specialist with the Sea Turtle Conservancy (STC) since 2019. She is also a certified LS-1through the National Association of Innovative Lighting Distributors. As alighting project specialist, she conducts property evaluations and pitches, designs lighting plans, manages retrofit contracts, and corresponds with property representatives. In addition to these duties, she also plans and coordinates educational code enforcement workshops around the state of Florida. Emily received her B.S. in Biology from Westfield State University and her M.S.in Coastal Marine and Wetland Studies from Coastal Carolina University, where she examined the effects of artificial light on sea turtle hatchlings in areas of relatively low light surrounding large cities. Since 2015, Emily has been involved with various nonprofits, universities, and government agencies to monitor sea turtle nesting beaches, participate in sea turtle research both in the water and on the beach, and educate coastal residents and visitors on the harmful effects of artificial light.

It is well known that overlaying the projection of one colorof light with the projection of a different color of light will result in thecreation of a third color on the reflected surface. And the use of computernetworks to control lighting is nothing new, either. What is new is thecontinued reduction in cost of LED-based luminaires and the development ofbetter, more affordable, user interfaces and controls, making a number ofdifferent approaches to white color tuning possible.

- Understand the design parameters of color-tuning systemsfor different applications

Presenter Background:
Chadwick is an Area Vice President and joined Finelite in February of 2015. As the lighting industry experiences its biggest change in over 20 years, Chadwick’s key responsibility is to drive the Finelite brand and build highly collaborative relationships with Finelite agents and their specification customers.
Prior to joining Finelite, Chadwick spent 18 years specializing in the lighting controls segment of our industry. During this time, he became an expert in Energy Efficiency and Manager for Leviton’s Lighting Controls division and prior to that was a Sales Representative for Lutron Electronics.
Chadwick holds a B.S. Degree in Marketing and Management from Virginia Tech.
